Swedish food is often ordinary cuisine
In Gamla Stan, we have Engelen, a restaurant that knows Swedish food and good live music. But, it would be more appropriate to call Engelen an entertainment house, as it combines a great steakhouse, excellent cover bands performing every night, and a night club advertised as the “liveliest in town.”
At Mårten Trotzig we have come to a restaurant with first-rate Swedish food in the bistro, dining room, or in the cellar vault that is a little more sealed off. The kitchen selects carefully the raw materials based on season and mood. The extensive wine list has wines from all over the world.
The restaurant is situated in the country’s narrowest alley with the same name. Actually, Mårten Trotzig was a German tradesman who arrived in the city from Germany at the end of the 16th century, and after becoming very successful, he decided to stay. Mr. Trotzig was also very fond of the pleasures of the table, so he would probably be very pleased with today’s outstanding restaurant.
Not far from here, we like dropping in on restaurant Kryp In, a cozy place covering 68 sq. m. Restaurant manager Vladimir Djuric and his staff greet us with a Swedish-French menu, which among other things includes cured cold-smoked reindeer, “souvas” in the Lapp language. Delicious!
More classic Swedish restaurants
Nalen is a unique establishment that has been carefully renovated, and thus has retained its original charm while it adapts to modern concerts, celebrations, and conferences.
At restaurant Nalen, it is only natural that we have a bite to eat before or after visiting the rest of the house. Here, we enjoy excellent and well-prepared food, made from Swedish raw materials.
– We work with a select group of Swedish farms and vendors in order to take our guest on a culinary trip through Sweden,” says Jessica Edling.
Blecktornskällaren, also called Bleckan, offers a traditional mouth-watering Swedish menu. Here, we feel at home with dishes, such as Biff Rydberg (Rydberg steak), pork fillet Oscar, and breaded plaice fillet. It might be of interest to you that the American soccer club, Stockholm Mean Machines, makes Bleckan its meeting place.
Restaurant C.C is situated in a historically exciting building, which has served as restaurant since the 15th century. At that time it was a tavern, while today it is a restaurant that features good things from the Swedish forests. The menu includes bear, reindeer, and wild boar. Foreign guest give the restaurant high marks. We enjoy very much wild bear fillet with a Madeira-blueberry sauce, among other things.
Restaurant with exquisite design at Stockholm Central Station
Those of us who are fond of Scandinavian design from the 1950-ies and 60-ies will enjoy Restaurant Stockholm. A well thought-out restrained, yet warm restaurant milieu will please both design fans and gastronomes.
The restaurant has a big bar and two smaller dining rooms. The bartender at Stockholm mixes delicious cocktails and, in addition, the bar features many good wines by the glass. How about a passion fruit daiquiri or a glass of Cava, both delicious and reasonably priced? Lunch, taster menus, à la carte, as well as Stockholm’s “traditional menu” are served in the dining rooms.
The chef, Michael Karlsson, chooses classic raw materials, but at the same time his cuisine is both modern and innovative.
Classic 60 Century designed restaurant in the Royal Haga Park
We will find more design at Haga Forum, which has an exquisite view over Brunnsviken and the southern gates of Hagaparken, which belongs to Nationalstadsparken. The old bus terminal serves today as a modernistic meeting place with space for a restaurant and conferences, speeches, art exhibitions, and design.
In the crisp and stylistically clean milieu, we meet for a business lunch, take the family out for a modern and flavorful à la carte dinner, and meet friends for the popular brunch served on weekends. It is an extra plus that the brunch is child-friendly. For children up to twelve years old, the cost of the brunch is one-half of the normal price charged.
